A Frugal Mindset and How to Keep It

A Frugal Mindset and How to Keep It

a frugal mindset

We all want more money in our bank accounts and frankly, that’s the main reason most people decide to be frugal.  There are lots of misconceptions about being frugal floating around but here is the truth.

A Frugal Mindset is a Choice

Living a frugal life is about setting spending limits, wise shopping, and cutting out unnecessary things we don’t really need or use.  Sometimes, in the beginning, it could be doing without some of the luxury’s we want, but in time you should be able to add some of those guilty pleasures back into your budget.

Making the decision to go frugal is great but many people fall short because they don’t stick with it.  To keep a frugal mindset it’s important to have a goal you are striving for in mind.  With these goals, you will stay motivated to keep up your frugal behavior and before long your finances will show it.

Maybe you want to get completely out of debt or save to pay cash for a car.  Whatever the goal, you can do what it takes to get there and it’s not as hard as you think.

A Frugal Mindset Always Stretches a Dollar

Dollar-stretching has been around a very long time.  I used to say my mom could squeeze a nickel out of a penny.  Even on a fixed income she always had money!

To stretch dollars you need to be a wise shopper, and to be a wise shopper sometimes you need to take the time to do some comparison shopping.  Most of this can be done online without ever leaving your home.

Simple tasks can also stretch your dollars.  Buying generic medicines, using store brands, and even buying used clothes.  Children outgrow their clothes so fast; why not buy them at the Goodwill or other thrift stores!  In most cases, the clothes look almost new!

It’s important to know where your frugal failures lie so it’s important to set a budget and keep track of where your money is going.  There is a free app by Dave Ramsey called “every dollar” that you can use to record everything.  Just go to the iStore or Play store.

A Frugal Mindset Still Appreciates the Finer Things

Just because you have a frugal mindset doesn’t mean you can’t still appreciate luxuries and the finer things.  It merely means you must either save money for these things or work a side hustle to pay for them.

Most frugal people I know also have a side hustles that brings them extra cash when they needed.  This could be anything from a gift basket business to selling on Amazon or eBay.
